Definition of organic:
According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, certified organic foods must be grown without toxic pesticides, chemical fertilizers, genetically modified organisms, artificial hormones or sewage sludge.
Studies show that organic foods may contain more nutrients (like antioxidants, phytonutrients, phytochemicals) than conventional foods. Also, eating organic foods can significantly reduce one’s exposure to pesticide residues. Organic farming also reduces the exposure of farm employees to toxic chemicals and local communities to pesticide drift.
Benefits of Eating Organic:
According to the three most prominent Canadian health & organic food associations* (CHFA, COG, COTA), there are five key benefits of buying organic foods:

- Protect and improve the environment and animal health
- Help maintain a clean water supply, soil health and fertitity, and
- Reduce the carbon footprint and fight climate change (organic farming can use 30-50% less energy).
